The Black Out Poetry Project seeks to introduce ‘old’ works of literature and turn them into something new. Focusing on the novel Oliver Twist by famous Portsmouth author Charles Dickens the series of workshops will see the people of Portsmouth transform pages of the text into a new, illustrated poem. Black Out Poetry also know as retracted or erasure poetry is a simple way of engaging with and creating poetry by simply erasing sections of the written text to leave a simple poem remaining. Participants will be guided through the process of creating their own poem and then encourages to draw and illustrate over the discarded words.

The workshops are delivered by Think Big Do Bigger who deliver creative and educational wellbeing workshops. Three workshops are being held in The Greenhouse within the stunning surroundings of Victoria Park and are free to attend for all. The remaining workshops are being delivered through partnerships with Createful CIC, Advance, The Base Guildhall, North End Baptist Church and The Learning Place. These workshops aim to reach members of the community who would otherwise find it difficult to participate.

Following the workshop series, the completed works will be displayed in The Greenhouse at Victoria Park on 30th May 2025 for participants, partners and the general public to view and celebrate the project outcomes together. Following on from this, the compiled works will be submitted for publishing.
