NEW PARTNERSHIP TO BOOST CREATIVE EMPLOYMENT FOR PORTSMOUTH’S YOUNG PEOPLE

We’re excited to announce our partnership with Artswork, a national youth arts charity, to transform the vacant Playland arcade in Commercial Road into a vibrant, youth-led creative hub. This new space will provide Portsmouth’s young people with a safe place to express themselves, build skills, and experience.

Playland will be a launchpad for young people, where they can learn essential business and creative skills, preparing them for careers in the creative industries. Managed by Portsmouth Creates, this hub will have space and support emerging local creatives, freelancers, and small businesses to grow and thrive.

Our collaboration with Artswork introduces fresh approaches to youth leadership and entrepreneurship, addressing key social challenges while creating sustainable career paths. The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner has pledged £25,000 to fund community programs that encourage pride, ownership, and reduce anti-social behaviour in Portsmouth.

Gemma Nichols, CEO of Portsmouth Creates, shared her enthusiasm:
“Bringing new life to Playland gives young people a place to be creative and real pathways into a fantastic industry. Our vision is to support Portsmouth’s creative future by creating spaces where young people can collaborate, learn, and grow.”

Annabel Cook, Deputy Chief Executive at Artswork, added:
“This creative hub is a unique opportunity for young people to shape their future. It’s a blank canvas they’ll develop and run themselves, creating activities that matter to them and their peers.”

This partnership marks a significant step in strengthening Portsmouth’s creative and cultural ecosystem. Together, Portsmouth Creates and Artswork is committed to providing a space where young people can thrive and find their place in the creative industries.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, added:
“The Playland project is a fantastic example of how creative partnerships can build Portsmouth’s future. By creating spaces for our young people, we’re ensuring that the city’s cultural industries continue to grow.”

Artswork is currently hiring for the position of ‘Creative Producer’ for Playland – applications close on 15 November. Find out more on their website
